Back to the ‘thirties?

‘Summertime and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high…’

The livin’ is not easy for many of us this summer and, as I write this, dark spectres of fear and uncertainty seem to be rising out of the global financial unconsciousness to menace and paralyse nations and governments.  Things look like getting worse before they get better, and whether they can get better in the way we have been used to may be open to doubt.  Leadership is uncertain and compromised across the world, extremism is on the march, and the wisdom of the experts is questioned. Meanwhile the lives of many people are being made harder through no fault of their own. (more…)

Letter from the Bishop

This year is proving to be one of considerable celebration despite the austerity and difficult economic climate.  While most of Britain has the dual focus of the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, we here in Hereford have a third prestigious event as it is Hereford Cathedral’s turn to host the Three Choirs Festival. This music festival is one of the oldest classical events of its kind, in the world. Originally held in early September it has for most of the 20th Century taken place in early August. However this year’s festival will take place even earlier, from 21 to 28 July, in order to avoid clashing with the summer Olympics. (more…)
